Our Hester Berry show is open!
Wednesday 21st August 2024
We are delighted to announce that our Hester Berry show is now open. We opened on Sunday evening to a steady flow of people returning from the other islands after a bright, Scilly, summer’s day. It was lovely to welcome people in and to hear their comments about Hester’s work.
There was surprise that Hester could visit for just a few days but take her photos and sketches back to her studio and produce the amount of work that she has within the space of a few short weeks. Many people were fascinated by her incredible use of light. Others were absorbed by her mark making - where she has applied the paint thickly to give it depth and texture but has done so with minimal brushstrokes and then scraped away at the layers to reveal what lies beneath. Eileen, who works in the gallery, is particularly taken with how each painting is completely different depending on how close or how far away you view it - each time she is in the gallery, she wanders around in awe!
Whether Hester’s work is for you or not, we recommend coming to see it, just to observe the work and see the gallery in a different light. Everyone is welcome, particularly browsers - don’t feel guilty for just coming in to have a look! Don’t forget that we offer the Own Art scheme where you can purchase any artwork over £100 for a 10% deposit and then pay for it in full, interest-free, over a ten-month period - just contact us for further details.
If you can’t get to us in person, you can view Hester Berry’s work on our website although it has to be said that it is hard to convey Hester’s dynamic work through two dimensional thumbnails on a screen; although they still look amazing, the true magic is in the real thing!
I know I sound gushy but I have really enjoyed unwrapping and hanging this exhibition. It is always fabulous to receive artists’s work - one of the the real highlights of gallery life (and there are many)! Like Eileen, I am still wandering around each day and noticing something different and surprising about Hester’s work. As a visitor who came along on Sunday and who had bought a large, original in the past, said: “I can gaze at it for hours. I am always noticing something new. I never get tired of looking at it.”
We hope you can come along and if not, we hope you have a look at Hester’s work on our website and her interpretation of Scilly during a stormy week at Easter.
