This sculpture has been handmade on the Isles of Scilly by local artist Oriel Hicks, using fused glass. The glass is set into a wooden base (handmade in Cornwall by Stuart Mackin). The sculpture features the bright colours of the pilot gigs as they race in the waves.

Oriel has worked with glass as a medium for thirty years and is inspired by the unique light, colour and natural environment of her island home. She experiments with many different techniques and processes including Tiffany, traditional leaded lights, etching and fused glass and her work is constantly evolving.
