Sara Mackin has lived in West Cornwall for over twenty years and says that being surrounded by creative people has encouraged her to undertake many creative pursuits herself. It was this that led her to begin needle felting and Sara makes Scilly Shrews and Scilly Seals for Tamarisk Gallery using this technique.
It is a craft which requires a lot of patience as each piece takes many hours to create. Sara uses a single barbed needle to compact unspun washed and carded wool from sheep and alpaca which enables the fibres to be sculpted, creating the shapes and details which bring each animal to life.
Sara says, “I love the way that every animal, although it may look similar, is absolutely unique. Each animal I create, takes on its own personality too!”
